When people criticize Dan Savage for the hateful, harmful things that he continues to say about trans folk, bi folk, fat folk, vaginas and uteruses, reproductive rights… or any of a number of other people and topics… often we’re told that even if he does say some problematic…
Fantastic commentary on this issue. Today seems to be the day for me to really contemplate how trans people are marginalized within another marginalized group. As a cis person, it’s something that I know academically happens, but that I don’t spend as much time dwelling on as I do issues that affect me personally. (And I’m not arguing that it’s right, just that every individual is prone to view the world through the lens of their own self-interest, at least a little bit.)
There is something uniquely harmful and damaging when people that are ostensibly allies say something that’s marginalizing. It’s like a sucker punch- you don’t see it coming so you don’t have your guard up, the way you would with someone that you know is openly hostile.
